The Medina of Sousse is the main attraction of the city, surrounded by 2.5 km of walls built in 859 during the reign of the Aghlabid sovereign of Kairouan Abu Ibrahim Ahmed. It is considered as a World Heritage of UNESCO. Inside, we are faced with the traditional lifestyle: a labyrinth of narrow streets, a variety of souks (shops): ceramics, leather, copper, wood, carpet, jewelry. The medina is a city-museum mixing life and monuments.
The top part is almost exclusively residential, the lower area is more suitable and practical for shoppers, central part is occupied by the souks. Time has changed nothing; more than a millennium and the medina of Sousse is still revealed to visitors.
Ramparts:The thick walls (2.10 m) are built in stone, making the walls of Sousse very solid. The walls extend over 2250 m, forming a kind of irregular parallelogram.
